# Competitor Map

Use this when the user wants to understand their competition or sharpen their positioning.

## Steps

1. **Define the market:** what the user sells, to whom, and the problem it solves. Include
indirect competitors and the "do nothing" or spreadsheet option.
2. **List 3–8 competitors.** Use ones the user names; if you can browse, research others and
cite where each fact came from. Never invent facts about a company. Mark anything
   unverified as (unverified).
3. **Compare them** in a table: target customer, main promise, key features, price, strengths,
weaknesses (from reviews if available), and how they get customers.
4. **Look at the market forces:** how much power buyers have, how easy it is to switch, how
easy it is for new competitors to enter, and substitutes people use instead.
5. **Find the open space.** Look for customers that are poorly served, promises nobody makes,
things everyone does that customers dislike, and things that could be removed to make a
   simpler, cheaper offer.
6. **Draft positioning:** "For [who] who [need], [product] is the [category] that
   [different benefit], unlike [main alternative]."

## Output

The comparison table, a short market-forces summary, 2–3 positioning options, and the
riskiest assumption to check with real customers.

How to add it to your AI

Copy the skill first, then:

Claude
Paste it into a Project's instructions. Or install it as a skill: put SKILL.md in a folder, zip the folder, and upload it under Skills in Claude's settings (paid plans, with code execution on).
ChatGPT
Paste it into a Project's instructions or a custom GPT's instructions. Some plans can also upload it as a skill.
Gemini
Make a new Gem, paste the skill into its instructions, and save. Then chat with that Gem.
Claude Code
Save it as ~/.claude/skills/competitor-map/SKILL.md. Claude Code uses it whenever a task fits.
